Richard Strauss worshipped Mozart and even once created a version of the latter's opera Idomeneo. The often sparkling violin concerto reflects Mozart's love of an instrument that he himself played and which was his father Leopold's lifelong study. The great Sinfonia Concertante for violin and viola, written in Salzburg in 1779 under the influence of his recent travels in Mannheim and Paris, is a more mature work and one whose beauty goes deeper. Another fascinating glimpse into Mozart, contrasted by signature works from Richard Strauss.
