It's true - the film of Mozart's life played on fantasy rather than reality - but it did highlight the mysteries surrounding the composer's last days. Salieri did not kill Mozart, but he did go to his own death claiming he had, and Rimsky-Korsakov sets that story, weaving in quotes from Don Giovanni and The Marriage of Figaro, before this rarity ends with a Requiem-obsessed Mozart drinking a poisonous draught prepared by Salieri. What a prelude to Mozart's last masterpiece! Legends in a new light. Read what Alan says
