A German legend using German folksong set in a German forest: Weber's Der Freischütz, a primeval tale of a pact with Satan, revolutionised German opera. Brahms is almost as devilish in the exquisite Concerto for Violin and Cello, where our two soloists playing as one sound like a 'super stringed instrument' - rich and deep sonorities here. 'No one,' wrote Beethoven, 'can love the country as much as I do. For surely woods, trees and rocks produce the echo which man desires to hear.' A profound vision of humanity and nature at one can be found in the 'Pastoral' Symphony.
