The RTÉ NSO's colourful and charismatic Principal Conductor Alan Buribayev makes his Summer Evening début conducting one of the great all-time symphonic favourites, and a romantic and virtuosic piano concerto with echoes of Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2 performed by the RTÉ NSO's Associate Artist, Finghin Collins.
Tchaikovsky's great Fifth symphony, intensely dramatic with an unmatched sense of theatre, veers between intense lyricism, beauty and violent drama. Stanford's second piano concerto featured in Finghin's acclaimed BBC Proms début in 2008. For Finghin, it is 'a great sweeping Romantic work full of grandiose melodies, dramatic exchanges and exhilarating virtuosity.' Finghin Collins was the first Irish pianist to record this work. The recording, for Claves Records with the RTÉ NSO and Kenneth Montgomery, was released earlier this year to critical acclaim including Gramophone Editor's Choice (May 2011).
