Symphony is Kevin O'Connell's first major orchestral work since the RTÉ-commissioned Four Orchestral Pieces (2007). O'Connell was awarded a multi-annual artist bursary (2007-2009) from the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon to compose the work.
Speaking of Symphony, Kevin notes: 'The symphony is unfashionable, yet it remains a challenge like no other. I have spent three years on my half-hour Symphony, and found that all the clichés are true. The form gives you nowhere to hide; what does not add takes away. Perhaps the fascination of its difficulty explains why I had to attempt it.'
Symphony will be recorded later this year by the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra and conductor Gavin Maloney for release in 2012 with two other large scale orchestral works by O'Connell, already recorded by the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra with conductor Gavin Maloney: Four Orchestral Pieces (2007) and North (1997-1998). The works will be released on the RTÉ lyric fm label as part of the Composers of Ireland series promoting the orchestral works of Irish composers and funded by RTÉ and the Arts Council.
