Brian Byrne conductor
Multi-talented young Irishman Brian Byrne, who contributed as pianist and arranger to the Sex and the City 2 soundtrack, joins the RTÉ Concert Orchestra & Big Band for one night only. On the programme, music from Sex and the City 2 and from Zonad, for which Brian won this year's Best Original Score IFTA, and swinging arrangements of film and TV favourites.
Guest vocalists Simon Delaney, Claire Bonass, Fred Johanson and Keith McDonald join the orchestra, and top Irish saxophonist Kenneth Edge gives the world première of Brian's saxophone concerto. There will also be a live performance of the signature tune to The Late Late Show, which Brian arranged and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra recorded when Ryan Tubridy took over as host.
For Sex and the City 2, working with an amazing group of session musicians in Los Angeles, Brian arranged Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered as well as playing piano for that and for Liza Minnelli's version of Beyoncé's Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It). As he says, it was nearly like working for the FBI, such was the determination to avoid leaks during the making of the film.
Originally from Navan, Brian moved to LA in 2003 to pursue a career as a film and television composer, and he has been constantly employed ever since both in the US and in Europe as a composer, conductor, songwriter, arranger and pianist. He has returned to Dublin over the years for an immensely popular series of Swingin at the . . . concerts with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, with Brian's arrangements giving their own distinctive jazzy flavour to favourites from the worlds of Motown, the Beatles, movie music and more. A selection of highlights from these concerts can be heard again this evening.
