Potato prices increased by 30% in 2012

The price of potatoes increased by 30.5% last year according to new figures from the Central Statistics Office.

Cereal prices went up by 16.5%; cattle prices by 12% and pig prices by 10.8%.

The figures are contained in the CSO's Agricultural Price Indices published today.

Milk and sheep prices fell by 9.5% and 4.4% respectively.

Also on the index - energy, seeds, feeding stuffs and fertiliser prices increased by 8.2%, 7.3%, 6.3% and 3% respectively.

Overall, the agricultural input price index increased by 4.5% in 2012 compared with 2011. The agricultural output price index increased by 3.8% over the same period. This means the trade index decreased by 0.7% in 2012.

On a monthly comparison, the agricultural output price index in December 2012 was 1.4% higher than in November 2012. The agricultural input price index was up 0.2% in December 2012 compared with November.
