A town in the US state of New Mexico has been covered in tumbleweed.

The weeds blocked roads and buried houses in the town of Clovis, leaving many residents trapped inside for hours.

Residents are calling it the tumbleweed invasion of 2014.

The Clovis Public Works Department has been clearing tumbleweeds since Sunday night, when they say high winds swept thousands of the prickly weeds into town.

While the clean up continues, the city is bracing itself for the next big storm, as more winds, and possibly more tumbleweed, are expected again in the region next week.
