A group of divers got more than they bargained for when they went out to try to hear some whales off the California coast.

Shawn Stamback and Jeremy Bonnett were in the water close to the back of their boat when a school of small fish began to swim frantically around them.

The two divers thought little of it until suddenly two humpback whales, both weighing around 50 tonnes and roughly five storeys tall, breached the surface, swallowing the fish and nearly taking the two men with them.

The whole incident was caught on video by Jay Hebrand, a friend of the two men who had remained on the boat.

The three friends have travelled the world trying to get as close as possible to sea life.
