TOMMIE'S TAKE

This is a constituency targeted by the SDLP for a seat gain. It is also tricky territory for Sinn Féin and the DUP.

In 2003 Sinn Féin won three seats but at constituency level it de-selected two of its three MLAs. One of them, Davy Hyland, subsequently resigned and criticised the party's policy shift on policing. He is running as an Independent.

The second, Pat 0'Rawe, remained a member of the Ard Comhairle, but contrary to strong hints, she was not added to the party ticket by HQ. Sinn Féin is running three candidates in a bid to hold its three seats.

The SDLP hopes outgoing MLA, Dominic Bradley, might be joined by Sharon Haughey, a party press officer with deep, extensive nationalist roots in the area.

Independent, Paul Berry, was a DUP in the last Assembly but was expelled from the party after a controversy about his private life. He hopes to hold his seat and the DUP's strategy is to just field one candidate. Outgoing UUP MLA, Danny Kennedy, is one of the party's high profile members.

It will be interesting to see what influence Independent, Willie Frazer, has on the outcome in what is his home area.

Quote of the Day

Have we learned nothing whatsoever in the past decade? Does anyone in this party actually believe that this sort of media coverage helps us?

Tommie's Take: 'Habemus Papa Doc'

History is on the march in Northern Ireland. Read RTÉ Northern Editor Tommie Gorman's take on how last week's events will affect the weeks ahead.

The Stormy History of Stormont

The history of the Northern Ireland Assembly dates back 35 years when the old Parliament of Northern Ireland was abolished.
