TOMMIE'S TAKE

Five of the six outgoing MLAs are seeking re-election here. Mark Durkan, the party leader, held John Hume's seat for the party in 2005 and should retain three Assembly seats here. Durkan is certain to be returned but Helen Quigley, the current Mayor of Derry, will compete with the two sitting SDLP members, Mary Bradley and Pat Ramsey.

Sinn Féin's Mitchel Mc Laughlin has gambled for the party by running in South Antrim. It has high hopes for Martina Anderson and should retain two seats here. Willie Hay of the DUP seems certain to win a unionist seat.

Independents running here include Peggy O Hara, the mother of hunger striker, Patsy O'Hara and William Frazer, one of the organisers of the Love Ulster rally in Dublin.

Quote of the Day

Have we learned nothing whatsoever in the past decade? Does anyone in this party actually believe that this sort of media coverage helps us?
