Jury retires in Galway murder trialFriday 25 January 2013 23.23
The jury at the murder trial of a 31-year-old Galway woman has been sent home for the weekend and will resume its deliberations on Monday morning.
Maura Thornton, from Inverin in Connemara, denies the murder of 59-year-old Kevin Joyce at an apartment in Upper Salthill in July 2011.
The jury of nine men and three women retired to consider their verdict this afternoon, on the fifth day of the trial at the Central Criminal Court, sitting in Galway.
After deliberating for almost two hours they had not reached a unanimous verdict - having been instructed to do so by Mr Justice Barry White.
Shortly after 4pm he sent them home for the weekend.
The judge said Ms Thornton could remain on bail for the weekend. The trial will resume at 11am on Monday.
