Cowen to explain Nice defeat to EU Foreign Ministers The Foreign Minister is to travel to Luxembourg in the morning, where he will be asked to explain Ireland's rejection of the Nice Treaty to the 14 other EU Foreign Ministers. Both the Taoiseach and Brian Cowen are said to have spent much of the weekend in telephone conversations with their EU counterparts.

Irish voters reject Nice Treaty Irish voters have, for the first time, rejected a referendum on Europe. With more than three quarters of the counts completed, just two constituencies have so far voted "yes". It appeals the final result will be approximately 54% against, to 46% in favour. The constituencies of Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown and Dublin South have consistently found themselves opposing the national trend in referenda over the years. It is been no different today, as they are the only constituencies to vote in favour of the Nice Treaty so far.
