- One of the biggest polling stations in Sligo Town had a final turnout of 60%, but in Tubbercurry the final turnout was as high as 70%

- Wicklow's turnout was averaging 52%, with some parts of the county up to 60%. In Wexford, turnout varies from 50% to 58%

- Although counting will not begin until Monday up North, early unofficial tallies suggest the DUP has suffered a major hit

- Sinn Fein is now tipped to emerge as the largest party for the first time in any Northern Ireland election

- Only 42.8% of people eligible to vote in Northern Ireland cast their ballots - a major drop on the figure of 51.72% at the last European election.

22:00: Polls have just closed in the Local and European elections and the two by-elections in Dublin. Indications are that polling was steady across the country in good conditions

- The highest turnout could be in Bundoran where 75% on the register had voted shortly before 9pm. There were predications the final turnout would be around 80%

- In one large polling station in Castlebar the turnout was 55% at 8.30pm, but in Kilcar in Co Donegal they expect it to hit 70% by 10pm

- Around Nenagh in Co Tipperary, turnout is estimated at 65% and 50% in other parts of the county. Tralee and Killarney in Kerry are averaging 50%

- Limerick and Waterford cities are both reporting turnout at around 50%, although it is noticeably lower in several parts of Cork City. Turnout in Cork County is ranging from 45% to 55%

- Around half of the 820,000 people entitled to vote in the South constituency in the European elections are estimated to have cast their votes

- Turnout in Monaghan is at 62%. Kilkenny City has had 54% of its electorate vote thus far

20:30: Turnout in the South East is running at about 48%. South Tipperary is the highest in the region at 50%, while Wexford Town has the lowest at 43%

- Voting is said to be steady in Meath this evening, with Kells and Athboy averaging 45% and Trim at 34%. It is projected that the overall turnout at the end of polling will be 55% to 60%

- Turnout in Ballybeg in Waterford City is averaging 35% at the moment. This is a fairly good indicator for the city. The county registrar says this generally doubles later in the evening

- Turnout brisker than expected across Galway at 5pm. Renmore is at 28%, while the East County is averaging 35%. One polling station in Ballinasloe Town is reporting a turnout of 42%

- Voting at polling stations in Limerick City and County continues to be brisk. One of the busiest polling stations on the northside of Limerick is reporting a turnout of 31%

- Voting is picking up in the East constituency, with Mountmellick at 24% so far and Portlaoise at 20%

16:30: Turnout in Cork is varying from 11% in Ballinhassig to up to 30% in Clonakilty and Cobh. Voting has been steady, and a surge is due at teatime

16:00: Voting has picked up in Dublin City with a turnout of over 15% by lunchtime. Overall, Dublin City and County saw the largest turnouts in areas covered by the two by-elections

- Voting has been fairly steady around Louth and Meath throughout the day. In Drogheda and Dundalk the turnout is estimated at around 17% so far.

- Two booths in the Scoil Ursula polling station in Sligo Town reported a turnout of 15% and 20% by 3pm.

- Turnout in Kilkenny City was over 15% at lunchtime, which was well up on figures at the same time in the last local elections.

- Areas in Galway City were reporting turnout of 11% at noon. On the edge of Galway city, suburban areas like Castlegar had a lower turnout of about 6%.
