2007 General Election
There was some speculation in 2007 that Dublin South East might be that rarest of species: a constituency with no Fianna Fáil TD, following the move to Europe of sitting TD Eoin Ryan.
Mr Ryan had polled 16.4% of the vote in 2002 and was elected ahead of running mate Chris Andrews. However, Mr Andrews managed to hold the seat for the party in 2007, topping the poll with 19.5% of the vote.
Fine Gael’s Frances Fitzgerald had lost her seat in 2002, and moved to Dublin Mid-West, leaving Lucinda Creighton as the party’s lone candidate in Dublin South East in 2007. Ms Creighton secured the second seat for Fine Gael with 18.7% of the vote.
Labour’s former leader Ruairi Quinn polled 16.7% of first preferences compared to 12.4% in 2002 to take the third seat on the fifth count.
The political career of Michael McDowell of the PDs was effectively ended when the Green Party’s John Gormley retained his seat despite a decrease in his vote share - down 2.5% to 13.8%.
2002 Turnout: 54.6%
2007 Turnout: 53.8%
