Some of the memorable elections from past years

There were unusual political posters in the 1920s and 1930s, a botched redrawing of the constituency boundaries in 1977, the €50m electronic voting experiment that went horribly wrong, and Fianna Fáil's fight back in the final days before voting in Election 2007.

Nowadays, posters tend to be flattering pictures of candidates.

However, when the State was founded the parties used posters to undermine each other and poke fun at the leaders of the rival parties and their policies.

The extraordinary election of 1977 gave Fianna Fáil and Jack Lynch their biggest ever majority.

The promise to abolish domestic rates and car tax helped them win.

However, it was a botched redrawing of the constituency boundaries by Jimmy Tully aimed at keeping Fianna Fáil out of office that turned a swing into a landslide.

It was an attempt to get away from what Bertie Ahern said was making us the laughing stock of Europe - using pencils and paper to count votes in what is the computer age.

Instead, we were to have electronic voting to give a complete constituency result just as soon as the polls closed.

It was an experiment that went horribly wrong and cost the taxpayer €50m.

During the last General Election, early opinion polls indicated that a change of government was on the cards.

The infamous cash dig-outs for Bertie Ahern was one of the big stories of the time, but Fianna Fáil fought back, rising in the polls in the last days before the vote.

They questioned whether Fine Gael and Labour could be trusted with the economy and Bertie Ahern blamed the media for his troubles.
