A man extradited from Australia this morning has been remanded in custody charged with a double murder in Co Armagh six years ago.

Stephen Smith, 30, from Armagh, appeared at Newry Magistrates' Court charged with the murder of Lisa McClatchey, 21, and Thomas O'Hare, 33, at their home in Tassagh, near Keady, in November 2006.

The couple were beaten with hammers before being doused in petrol and set alight. They died in hospital shortly after.

Mr Smith was arrested in Sydney, Australia, at the request of the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

After extradition proceedings he arrived in Ireland in custody this morning.

In court he spoke only to give his name, which he gave in Irish, as Stiofán MacGabhann.

He was remanded in custody and will appear in court next week along with two other men charged with the same murders.
