There was a slight reduction in the volume of goods handled at Irish ports last year.

According to the CSO, 46.7 million tonnes of goods were handled at the ports last year, a reduction of 927,000 tonnes, or nearly 2%, on the previous year.

There was an increase in the number of vessels arriving in Irish ports during 2013.

They were up just over a percent to 11,940.

However, the total gross tonnage of these vessels fell by 6.7% to 209.8 million tonnes.

The routes between Dublin and three UK ports - Milford Haven, Holyhead and Liverpool were the busiest routes for inward movement of goods in 2013.
