The number of people taking trips to Ireland increased by 7.5% in the three month period from February to April compared to the same time last year.

A total of 1,566,600 trips were made into the country in that time - an overall increase of 109,200 compared to the same three month period in 2013, according to CSO figures.

The number of trips made by Irish residents in the same period was up just over a percent in that period to 1,346,300.

Upsurge in trips from Britain

There was a significant increase in the number of trips taken by residents of Britain into Ireland.

735,800 trips were taken in the three month period, an increase of 15.2%.

Trips by North American residents were down by 4.6% to 197,700.

Trips by residents of European Countries other than Great Britain increased by 3.1% to 558,200 while trips to Ireland from Other Areas increased by 7% to 74,900.

The total number of trips taken into and out of Ireland in the period increased by 4.5%. 

2,912,900 trips were made in the three months of February, March and April.
