A consortium led by UTV Media has been awarded a licence to broadcast a 24-hour sports radio station in South Africa.

The station will use the TalkSport brand, with the new station modelled on its British-based name-sake, according to UTV.

The licence allows it to broadcast to a potential audience of eight million people in the Gauteng, which includes the cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria.

UTV Media is one of five companies involved in the consortium, all of which hold an equal stake in the business.

The four other investors are all South African companies, namely; Direng Investment Holdings, Jomo Sono Investments, Courageous Holdings and Altivex 705.
