New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that the number of planning permissions granted in the fourth quarter of last year fell by 15.9%.
Planning permissions were granted for a total of 1,556 "dwelling units" in the last three months of the year, compared to 1,851 the same time in 2012.
Today's figures also show that the number of planning permissions approved for apartments nationwide slumped by 62.4% to 162 units compared with 431 units in the fourth quarter of 2012.
Planning permissions were approved for 1,394 houses in the three month period from October to December, down 1.8% on the 1,420 granted the same time the previous year.
The CSO noted that one-off houses accounted for over 41% of all new dwelling units getting planning permission in the period under review.
