The number of new cars sold last month rose by 23.1%, according to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office.

The CSO said that the number of new cars licensed for the first time increased to 11,906 in February 2014 from 9,671 in February 2013.

The number of new goods vehicles sold last month jumped by 44.6% to 1,620 from 1,120 the same time last year, while the number of used cars sold increased by 22.1% to 4,537.

Today's figures show that of the 11,906 new cars sold in February, 74.3% were diesel, while 24.4% were petrol. 

The most popular brand of new car sold last month was Volkswagen, which sold a total of 1,432 models. This was followed by Toyota (1,262), Ford, (1,135) and Opel (1,102).

CSO figures for January had shown an increase of 48.8% in the number of new cars sold.
