Supermarket chain Supervalu recorded 1% growth in sales to reach €2.1 billion in 2013.

Figures published by the retailer do not include sales at Superquinn shops which were rebranded as Supervalu earlier this year.

The Supervalu sales figures tally with recent market share data published by research company Kantar Worldpanel which show the retailer gained market share in 2013.

Supervalu's share of the Irish grocery market edged above 20% last year for the first time since 2009. With the addition of the 24 Superquinn shops, Supervalu has a 25.2% market share.

In a statement the retailer said three new Supervalu stores would be opened in 2014, bringing its chain to 226.

The €7m investment in the three new shops will result in the creation of 210 jobs.

A further €12m will also be invested in the expansion and refurbishment of 45 stores around the country this year.

The majority of Supervalu shops are operated by independent retailers who buy their produce from Musgrave group, which operates the Supervalu brand.
