Bord Gáis Energy’s residential electricity prices are to increase by 2.2% from 1 March as the company’s recent price freeze comes to an end.

The rise will add over €26 a year to the average residential electricity bill, according to the utility.

Bord Gáis Energy said the increase was being caused by a weakened euro as well as changes in wholesale energy costs.

The company said that it had opted to hold prices late last year when others were announcing increases but an increase was now necessary once its price freeze came to an end.
