New figures show that planning permissions for a total of 2,308 dwelling units were granted in the first quarter of this year. This is up 24.7% on the last quarter of 2012.
Breaking down the figures, the Central Statistics Office said that planning permission was granted for the building of 1,860 houses in the first three months of the year, up 31% on the previous quarter,
Planning permission for 448 apartment units was also granted, an increase of 3.9% on the last quarter of 2012.
The CSO said that once-off houses accounted for 33.5% of all new dwelling units in the first three months of the year.
Today's figures reveal that total floor area planned was 930,000 square metres in the first quarter of 2013. Of this, 42.4% was for new dwellings, 39.4% for other construction projects and 18.2% for extensions.
The total floor area planned increased by 21.9% compared to the previous quarter, the CSO added.
