Independent News & Media has appointed Stephen Rae as Editor in Chief of the Irish Independent, Sunday Independent and Evening Herald, with immediate effect.

Reporting to INM’s group chief executive, Mr Rae will have responsibility for the titles’ print and digital publications.

He will ensure that the titles are ''appropriately structured, resourced and aligned for an increasingly digital future'', a statement from the company said.

INM said an announcement regarding Mr Rae's replacement as editor of the Irish Independent will be made in due course.

Mr Rae was appointed editor of the Irish Independent in September 2012. He is the former editor of the Evening Herald, having previously served as its deputy editor, associate editor (News) and security correspondent.

“A key challenge for Stephen and our exceptional team of editors and journalists is to make our market leading content and great writers more accessible to consumers in a manner and at a price that sustains consumer engagement and the integrity and quality of our reportage,'' commented INM's CEO Vincent Crowley.
