Trips by overseas visitors to Ireland are down 8.3% between July and September this year, compared to the same period in 2009.

According to figures from the CSO, trips by visitors to Ireland from January to September are down 15.7%, compared to the same period last year.

Figures show that there were 4,622,800 trips to Ireland this year, down from 5,481,400 for the same time a year ealier, a drop of 858,600.

The amount of trips abroad by Irish residents between July and September this year was little changed for the same period in 2009.

However, this contrasts sharply with the 12% fall in trips for the same period between 2008 and 2009.
