Over 170 workers today picketed the Roches Stores outlet at the Wilton Shopping Centre in Cork City over fears for the future of their jobs.
Marks and Spencer were due to take over the running of the shop, but a deal between Roches Stores and the UK chain has fallen through. Mandate has expressed its concern at the development.
Roches Stores announced earlier this year that it was to sell 10 of its 11 stores. Nine of the stores were sold to Debenhams, and one - in Wilton Shopping Centre in Cork - to Marks and Spencer. Another Roches Stores shop closed.
Today 170 members of staff picketed the store in Wilton Shopping Centre after a deal to transfer the lease to Marks and Spencer fell through over the weekend. A spokesperson for Marks and Spencer said they were extremely disappointed at the news, and that the company was 'considering its position'.
