An Irish woman has died after the yacht she was travelling on capsized off the coast of South Africa.

The 49-year-old woman had been living in the Western Cape province of South Africa.

A 61-year-old Scottish man also died in the incident.

South African rescue crews located the vessel broken up in rocks after the alarm was raised by a 66-year-old Irish man who had managed to get to shore.

He was not injured in the incident.

They were the only three people on the yacht, which was reportedly sailing from Langebaan to Cape Town.

Authorities do not yet know what caused the yacht to run aground and they have not yet confirmed if it had capsized before running aground.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed it is providing consular assistance in the case of an Irish citizen who died in South Africa.
