Two people have died in separate road crashes in counties Donegal and Mayo last night.

A former Mayo minor footballer has died in a single vehicle crash at Carrowmore near Ballinrobe.

He has been named as Darragh Doherty from Kilmaine who played at centre-forward on the team that claimed the Tom Markham Cup in 2013, scoring 1-02 in the match.

The 19-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene after his car crashed into a wall at around 10.30pm. His body was removed to Mayo General Hospital where a post-mortem examination is to take place.

A teenager who was also in the car received non-life threatening injuries.

Kilmaine GAA described Mr Doherty as an outstanding footballer who brought honour and glory to his club and county.

In a statement on its Facebook page, the club said he won several divisional and county titles with Kilmaine and Carras underage team.

He is survived by his parents and four brothers.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone with information to contact Claremorris Garda Station on 094-9372080.

In Co Donegal, a 70-year-old man died following a two-vehicle collision in Ballintra, Co Donegal at around 10.30pm on the N15 at Drumcroil.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to Sligo General Hospital.

Three other passengers travelling with him, one man and two women, were taken to Sligo General Hospital with injuries described as serious but not life threatening.

The driver and passenger of the second vehicle were also taken to Sligo General Hospital where they have been treated for minor injuries.

The N15 is closed and local diversions are in place.
