A disused factory in Portarlington has been extensively damaged after a fire overnight.

Around 12 units of the fire services attended the scene of the blaze at the building on Canal Road.

Units from Laois, Kildare and Offaly attended the fire at the former Avon factory.

The blaze has now been brought under control but it is understood the building has been extensively damaged.

Gardaí and fire services from Laois remain at the scene.

Elsewhere, one person was rescued from a house fire in Palmerstown in Dublin this morning.

Three units of Dublin Fire Brigade responded to the blaze at Whitethorn Gardens at around 2am.

An individual was rescued from the house and brought to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

It is understood they are in a stable condition.
