The Lord Mayor's office in Dublin estimates that around 5,000 people paid their last respects to Albert Reynolds.
The former Taoiseach was lying in repose at the Mansion House yesterday.
Mr Reynold's coffin was last night moved to the church of the Sacred Heart in Donnybrook, Dublin.
The mourners were led by his wife Kathleen, along with his seven children and extended family.
Taoiseach Enda Kenny was also in attendance, along with former Taoisigh and Fianna Fáil colleagues.
The State funeral will take place on Monday.
The Irish flag has been lowered to half mast over Government buildings as a mark of respect.
