In the past 24 hours, the Ice Bucket Challenge has generated more than €16,000 for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.

RTÉ’s Sharon Ní Bheoláin was the latest in a line of well known faces to complete the challenge.

She has already exceeded her sponsorship target of €1,000 in aid of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA).

So far, she has raised nearly €3,000.

The newscaster was nominated by the Nicky Byrne Show on RTÉ 2fm and on the Nine O'Clock News on RTÉ One on Tuesday night.

She has gone on to nominate comedian Oliver Callan.

"Having witnessed their brilliant work and unfaltering support for family and care givers personally, I will happily take my ice shower... So dig deep for IMNDA and I'll step up to the plate!", Ms Ní Bheoláin said.

The internet trend, which began in July in the United States, has since raised millions of euro for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) the umbrella term used in the US for motor neurone diseases.
