A report from the Comptroller and Auditor General has recommended greater use of day surgery as an alternative to overnight stays for patients where appropriate.

It recommends setting targets for individual procedures, rather than setting an overall target for day surgery.

The report is being laid before the Dáil by Minister for Health Leo Varadkar.

The minister said making day surgery the default option for more procedures should increase the number of surgeries being carried out and reduce waiting lists.

It is also expected to produce some savings in the long term.
