Irish Water and Galway County Council have started to bring an emergency supply of water to Inis Meáin on the Aran Islands.

The water level on the island had reached a critically low level in recent days.

This evening a shipment of 120,000 litres of water was brought to the island to replenish the reservoir.

It is also planned to bring an emergency supply to Inis Oírr in the coming days.

Restrictions on water usage will remain in place on both islands until further notice.
