Two plead guilty over Galway sexual assaultTuesday 22 July 2014 17.19
Two men have pleaded guilty to charges in connection with a sexual assault on a 15-year-old girl in Galway in 2012.
The men, both aged 19, were appearing before the Central Criminal Court, which was sitting in Galway this afternoon.
One of them pleaded guilty to sexual assault. The other pleaded guilty to defilement or statutory rape.
Senior Counsel for the Director of Public Prosecutions John Jordan told the court that the pleas were acceptable to the State.
Mr Jordan told the jury that charges against a third man in connection with the same incident were being dropped.
He said this was in light of the guilty pleas from the other defendants and because the third man had faced charges of "secondary participation".
Mr Justice Barry White thanked the jury of seven men and five women and excused them from further service for life.
