Kilkenny County Council is holding an emergency meeting this afternoon to discuss An Bord Pleanála's decision to grant approval for the city's northern ring road extension.

Members of the group opposed to the central access scheme in Kilkenny City addressed the council's monthly meeting yesterday and described the proposed new bridge and road as a "horrific plan".

Protesters gathered outside County Hall, where the meeting was held, to show their opposition to the scheme.

Campaigners have been involved in a 24-hour protest at the site of the multi-million euro scheme for over two weeks.
