A man has died after getting into difficulty following a diving expedition off the coast of Inisboffin in Co Galway.

The man, who is understood to be in his late 40s, was among a group of 12 who had travelled to the west coast today.

He had been diving in an area close to the East Harbour in Inishboffin, a short distance from the shoreline.

The group resurfaced from a dive at around 2.30pm this afternoon.

It is understood the man took ill after he resurfaced. Reports suggest he collapsed on the dive vessel.

He was treated there by a local nurse who was taken to the scene by another boat.

The coast guard helicopter Rescue 118 from Sligo was called and members of the Clifden Lifeboat were also alerted.

CPR was administered to the man by the nurse, who was then assisted by a doctor and members of the RNLI.

The man was airlifted to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

A post-mortem examination will be carried out tomorrow.
