Tributes have been paid to Jeremy Browne Altamont, the owner of Westport House in Co Mayo, who died at the age of 75 yesterday following an illness.
Minister of State for Tourism Michael Ring said Mr Altamont had been a driving force in the promotion of Westport as a tourist destination and had given a life of service to the town and surrounding area.
Under his guidance, Westport House and gardens became a significant tourist attraction in the region.
In recent years, a two-day music festival has been held there, with major headlining acts travelling to the Co Mayo town.
Born Jeremy Browne, he was married to Jennifer Cooper and had five daughters, Sheelyn, Karen, Lucinda, Clare and Alannah Browne.
The Oireachtas passed a specific act in 1993 to resolve an inheritance issue that faced Mr Browne, the 11th Marquess of Sligo.
He had entered into a trust in 1963, which provided that his eldest son would be the sole beneficiary of his estate and its assets after his death.
Mr Browne had no sons but there was no provision in the original document to allow the trust to be changed.
The Browne (Amendment of Deed of Trust) Act allowed for the matter to be resolved.
