A rare painting by the artist Johannes Vermeer has been sold at auction in London for almost €8m.

The picture, which features the Roman martyr Saint Praxedis, is believed to be the earliest known work by Vermeer.

The Dutch master produced fewer than 40 paintings during his lifetime, including his best-known work, "Girl with a Pearl Earring".
