Gardaí have confirmed that a body found in Co Clare this morning is that of missing Galway man Adrian Folan.

Mr Folan was last seen in Athlone last Thursday night.

His body was found in a disused quarry a short distance from the village of Liscannor in north Clare. His death is being treated as suspicious.

The body has been removed from the scene for a post-mortem examination at University Hospital Limerick.

Crime scene investigators spent a number of hours conducting a detailed examination of the area where the body was found.

Gardaí have appealed for anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in the area over the weekend to contact them in Ennistymon on 065-7072180.

The discovery came as detectives continued an investigation into the disappearance Mr Folan.

A student at Athlone Institute of Technology, he had been working on an end of year project with some classmates.

Gardaí were alerted when he failed to show up at the college on Friday morning.

A man in his 40s was arrested as part of the inquiry this morning.

He is being detained at Mill Street Garda Station in Galway city.
