A bomb alert at the headquarters of the British Army in Northern Ireland has ended.

Police said the alarm was raised this morning following the discovery of a suspicious object inside the perimeter fence of Thiepval Barracks in Lisburn.

British Army bomb disposal experts were called to the scene and a number of homes in the area were evacuated before the area was declared safe this afternoon.

A police spokesman said bomb disposal officers had examined the object and "declared it was nothing untoward".
