A Ku Klux Klan flag that was flying on a lamp-post in east Belfast has been removed by the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

They were put up on lamp-posts at Island Street and removed following a complaint to the police from the local Alliance MP for the area, Naomi Long.

The police said a number of families with an ethnic minority background live in the area where the flags were flown.

Northern Ireland's First Minister Peter Robinson condemned the appearance of the flags in

Mr Robinson said the flags were "grossly offensive" and it flying them was an "intimidatory act".

The light blue flag that was put on the lamp-post features an Aryan eagle over a KKK symbol and bears the words, New Order Knights and Ku Klux Klan.

The Ku Klux Klan is a secretive racist group formed in the United States opposing civil rights for African Americans and equality for minority groups.
