An eight-year-old girl has died in a road crash in Co Cork.

The girl died in the two-car crash at Owenahincha Cross, Rosscarbery, Clonakilty at around 3pm. 

Her body has been removed to Cork University Hospital.

Her mother, who is in her early 30s, was airlifted to Cork University Hospital and is said to be in a critical condition.

The driver of the car they were travelling in and three other passengers received minor injuries,.

The 17-year-old driver of the second car was treated for minor injuries.

The road has been closed for a technical examination and local diversions are in place.
