US Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, held for five years as a Taliban prisoner of war before being released on 31 May, will return to the United States tomorrow after receiving care at a military hospital in Germany, a senior defence official said on today.

Sergeant Bergdahl, released in a prisoner swap for five Taliban leaders held at Guantanamo, was expected to be sent to a military hospital in San Antonio, Texas, for further treatment.

His release sparked a political uproar because the administration did not notify Congress beforehand.
