The Oireachtas Health Committee has expressed 'serious concern' over the fact that it is not allowed to consider any matter that is being looked at by the Public Accounts Committee.

The Chairman of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children, Jerry Buttimer, has written to the Committee on Procedure and Privileges over the matter.

In his letter, Mr Buttimer said the Health Committee was recently forced to cancel a scheduled meeting with the HSE.

He said they were due to look at additional payments to senior staff in voluntary hospitals and agencies that receive state funding, but had to cancel the meeting because the PAC was already looking at the issue.

Mr Buttimer said in his letter that the issue is not only about expenditure but also about the provision of services.

He added that at a meeting in May members of the Health Committee discussed the development and were unanimously of the view that the situation was 'totally unacceptable'.

The Health Committee wants the Committee on Procedure and Privileges to examine and amend the rule which restricts other committees looking at matters that are being examined by the PAC.
