Independent TD Mick Wallace has repeated his call for the new garda commissioner to be recruited from outside the State.

It has emerged that despite an assertion by Acting Garda Commissioner Nóirín O'Sullivan last week that senior gardaí had been in contact with whistleblower Sergeant Maurice McCabe, contacts only began on Tuesday.

Sgt McCabe is currently on stress leave from his job.

He has made a number of new allegations about his treatment at the hands of gardaí in the workplace.

Mr Wallace said Sgt McCabe was complaining of ongoing harassment for months and nothing was done.

He said the contacts this week were reactive and that the interim commissioner should investigate what has been going on.
