Interim Garda Commissioner Nóirín O'Sullivan has spoken with garda whistleblower Sergeant Maurice McCabe.

Ms O'Sullivan had a telephone conversation with Sgt McCabe following her appearance before the Oireachtas Justice Committee yesterday afternoon, where she was asked by Sinn Féin's Pádraig Mac Lochlainn to speak to the sergeant.

Mr Mac Lochlainn told Ms O'Sullivan that he had been deeply alarmed by what Sgt McCabe told him.

The sergeant has been on sick leave since last Monday and has documented a number of incidents of alleged harassment over the past month.

He is currently attached to the traffic unit in Mullingar.

The acting commissioner also told the committee that she had spoken to the interim Confidential Garda Recipient about the issue.

She said she would ensure the matter was fully dealt with and would not tolerate bullying, harassment or intimidation of any garda.

The details of the conversation between the commissioner and the sergeant are confidential and have not been revealed.
