A 34-year-old Irishman has drowned in Australia during the annual Vivid Sydney event.

It is believed the man, named locally as Brendan Hickey, died after falling into the water at Darling Harbour during the light show.

The incident happened at around 11pm yesterday local time (2pm Irish time).

New South Wales Police said two friends with the man at the time jumped into the harbour trying to save him but they could not find him in the water.

Officers from the Marine Area Command, Police Rescue and New South Wales Ambulance helicopter launched a search of the area.

Police divers recovered the man's body from the water about two hours later.

A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs said the embassy in Canberra and the Consulate in Sydney are aware of reports that an Irishman drowned, and officials are looking into the matter.
