Surgeon gets apology from HSE after seven years

The HSE has apologised to a consultant surgeon based in Our Ladies Hospital in Navan and agreed to pay him damages and legal costs, seven years after he initiated High Court action against them.

Surgeon Joe McGrath had taken his action challenging findings made about him in  a number of HSE reports about services in Our Ladies Hospital.

In  a statement read to the court, the HSE apologised to Mr McGrath and his family for failing to honour his rights to fair procedures in the context of reviews undertaken of the hospital  from 2005 to 2010.

 It stated the HSE "deeply regrets" the suffering its actions have caused Mr McGrath. professionally and personally. No details of the financial settlement were divulged.
